WHERE IS CRH THE WORLD WONDERS

As may be obvious to even the most casual observer, I have not had a lot of time to blog lately, not even to recover from the Blogger conversion from last month. The result is a plethora of JJV's bloggy goodness, at which I can only snipe furtively in comments until my boss shows up at my desk again. The true motivation behind JJV's decision to go into business for (basically) himself is now revealed.

Our third contributor remains a Blogger in Being, but now would be as good a time as any for CRH to sally forth from whatever Gondolin he has built for himself.

Help us, CRH - you're our only hope!

Is the title of this post a reference to the Battle of Leyte Gulf? Just curious.

You are correct, sir. Thank you for playing our Hidden Trivia Game!

Bonus round: What is the origin/purpose of the last three words in that message?

Was R2D2 involved?

My recollection is that the "purpose" of the last three words on the message that so enraged "Bull" Halsey was "communications padding" - random stuff to throw off codebreakers and not intended to be part of the substantive message at all. And that it was in fact added by some j.g. lieutenant completely thoughtlessly.

PS: R2D2 was not involved, although perhaps if they'd had a protocol 'droid like C3PO (fluent in millions of different forms of communication) then perhaps history would have been very different ...

John C,

Well done. On to the next round, which will happen when you least expect it.

Here is the Wikipedia entry for the controversial message. I thought I had read somewhere that "the world wonders" was simply the next set of padding on the list (in the same way that Overlord was selected for the D-Day operation) but Wikipedia says the radioman did it. Not that Wikipedia is omniscient, but anyway.
