One of the more glaring examples of the Bush Administration's mendacity and corruption is the recent DOJ report on the unethical and illegal activities of Monica "I Swear That I Acted Alone" Goodling. Ms. Goodling apparently single-handedly carried out her nefarious agenda to staff the Justice Department with "Good Americans," who she self-defined as Republican, uber-Christian, straight individuals who were willing to swear complete allegiance and fealty to King George the Younger (also known as King George the Idiot). The money question that Ms. Goodling asked of prospective nominees for career Justice appointments (which, by law, are non-political positions -- also, despite what JJV might allege, these career positions have traditionally been filled on a non-partisan basis by both Republicans and Democrats) is as follows:
"[W]hat is it about George W. Bush that makes you want to serve him?"
Gee, I wonder if answering that question with "his complete disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law is soooo sexy" would have gotten me a job at Justice?
As the very humorous blog post linked above points out, Ms. Goodling was clearly separated at birth from Angela of the Office.
"Just slightly down the food chain is an arch-conservative Christian woman whose loyalties are to her immediate superiors and her ecclesiastical ones. Monica Goodling, the 33-year-old graduate of Messiah College and Pat Robertson's Regent University Law School -- unofficial motto: "A third of our graduates can pass the bar exam!" -- is obviously the basis for Angela. Cruel and cold-hearted, she believes that eternal justice is on her side, and wants to bring down God's vengeance on whoever she can, whether it be Kelly from Customer Service or 93 dirty, rotten, disloyal U.S. Attorneys."

To be fair, when the mission of your administration is to reduce the capability and efffectiveness of government*, you have to be very selective about who you hire.
* Except for wiretappers, torturers and Vice Presidents.
At the same time they wanted to stuff the bureacracy with ideologues to advance a particular agenda. This itself is nothing particularly new, but the combination of that with the simultaneous aggressive and intentional decompetence of government suggests a lack of long-term thinking.
Fortunately, John Sidney McCain III will make all of this right in his own mavericky... um... idiom.
Let's see, who did the Clinton's put at Justice to make sure everything was ok, oh yea, a guy named Hubbel. Indicted, convicted, and now an ex-felon. Ms. Goodling is a Washington-type that i here in every administration. To ascribe it to GWB is to lose site of what this town is and who it attracts. I really wish she had been sent to State, that place is in great need of Good Americans.
I also will not go into it, but Lietzy is well aware i interviewed with Clinton era Justice and the grilling I got on my associations. I do not support violation of the law but when it comes to staffing I am a Jacksonian. The administration needs people willing to support the platform it ran on. Goodling was merely following the precepts of one of the two main founders of the Democratic Party, and of course for this she is criticized.
She has a right to be picky. I heard that all the potential hirees were fired from the White House travel office 15 years ago.
Thank you for putting this in context, Anonymous. It is important to remember that Clinton did it and also he got a blowjob, so whatever has transpired since pales in comparison.
OK, now I think the healing can begin.
