Air guitar I suppose to some is a legitimate instrument...but once a man hits forty, shouldn't he give up playing? If you've not learned rhythm by then, I don't see it happening. I just returned from seeing The Black Crowes at Wolf Trap and was amused by the enthusiastic "playing along" with the band.
Much to the disappointment of a couple of women within earshot, the crowd was not enthusiastic enough. One thanked a particularly energetic air guitar guy for his participation and "whooping". My opinion is that the more "seasoned" crowd was as energetic as a hot Sunday evening would allow and were not drunk, stoned or agile enough to dance like they used to.
From what I could see and hear, the crowd had a great time...Chris Robinson with his amazing voice, still has moves and he and the band put on an excellent show.

There is no upper age limit for air guitar.
However, and this is very important, playing air guitar along with a live band is RIGHT OUT. Not only is it simply completely lame, but you're never going to improve your AG skills if you're not paying complete attention to the band.
Thank you. Gotta run, "Pride and Joy" is on the radio.
