Ross Douthat, who is almost always wrong but is usually interesting, like millions of other writers has taken the occasion of the last game at Yankee Stadium to reflect on the Yankees. He's written a pithy and accurate elegy on the modern team.
I think, though, any elegy for the Yankees is premature. They've had a long run now of failing to meet the expectations set for them, but I don't think the faith of fans and management that a few small changes of the right kind would restore the franchise to the level of play that inspires so much fear and loathing in the rest of the country is misplaced. If only we could agree on what those changes are.

I see no need to be hasty in determining what those changes might be. It would be best to maintain that discussion for as long as reasonably possible.
Or, they could take a page from the government's playbook and throw $700 billion at the problem.
