Supplementary Research

Yesterday's map reminded me that it had been a while since I last visited Strange Maps, an excellent site, and I found there the map linked above, produced by the owner of Lyke 2 Drink. The map shows the number of medal winners by state for the past 21 years from the Great American Beer Festival, sponsored by the Brewers Association and held annually in Denver.

I don't have the time to comment on it fully, except to note that Colorado once again stands out, and the upper midwest does indeed appear to be creating well-regarded beer, even if it's not coming from large craft breweries. If you're visiting West Virginia, just hope that your beer is imported from another state.

The attached charts make me worry about the quality of the judging, though. The top 3 prize-winning breweries are Anheuser-Busch, Miller and Pabst? I'd love to know the categories in which they won--Best Beer to Use as a Shampoo? Best Homeopathic Beer? Genesee Cream Ale has won 10 medals.

The Brewers Association, by the way, is a trade group representing craft brewers.

Ah, Genesee Cream Ale. "Our one brewery makes it best," indeed.

I am delighted to see that beer has brought CRH roaring back into the blogosphere.

Yeah, wtf is up with that?

Old Milwaukee Light?! Not even the regular but the light?! Are you kidding me?! And O'Doul's gets mentioned TWICE? And one of them is not even real beer!

I say it's time to organize a P4500 beer tasting party, with the blogging heads and loyal commenters as judges. All who approve, type "aye."

Aye! Welcome back CRH!!! Mmmm, Fat Tire and Shiner Bock...have had both in Texas with excellent beef BBQ.

J - Nationals Stadium has an OK selection of beer. No swilling crap during the Mets game. Just wathcing the crappy Mets (oh wait, you'll be rooting for them, sorry). :) EMM

God love GCA Dave S., who knew?

Be careful whom you call "crappy," o Nationals fan. ; ) Just say "no" to Bud Light!
