Bad Astronomy reminds us that today (for the next five minutes at least) is the 40th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11, and directs us to this amazing collection of images from 1969.
I am sorry to say that while I remember most of the other Apollo missions and was alive in 1969, I do not remember this one, but the pictures bring to mind my own recollections of watching Walter Cronkite during the launch coverage and assembling/disassembling a plastic Saturn V model along with the TV people, as well as having the afternoon soaps interrupted for coverage of the splashdown and recovery of the command module.
I'd like to think that my kids would be able to see such sights for themselves. In the meantime, say what you will (and I do) about Billy Bragg's politics, but the guy can write:

Mr. J-TWO-O and I will also be on the road next week (to Cooperstown and Montreal or bust!), but will have our laptops. So I will probably blog about that one big step on Monday. : )
I remember this event clearly. My parents made a really big deal about it and put me in front of the TV to watch.
1969 was a big year for me as a 3 year old. The Moon, Sesame Street and I realizing I was no longer going to be an only child.
