I always intend to skip the SOTU. And I always don't.
This year, at least, I watched/listened to it via a netcast which provided MST3K-style running commentary which made it tolerable. That's the promise of the 21st Century: snark AND substance, all rolled into one high-bandwidth package.
The problem the President flagged is real. Companies want very badly to get patents on human/animal hybrids and then run with it. This type of commercialization of the dehumanization of American life (see horse boffing) is part of a project that most American's are very leery of. Plus, there is no example of half man/half animals every turning out well. "Even a man whose pure of heart and says his prayers at night/can become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the stars are out and bright...

That human-animal hybrid line was one of my "huh?" moments of the speech.
The other was Bush namechecking Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Reagan, Poppy Bush, and Clinton. Democrats win 4-2?
That really seemed to strike a chord, or perhaps one of those huge gongs, throughout the blogosphere.
I avoid the SOTU like the plague but I wonder why he didn't mention Ike. Hoover and Nixon I can understand.

JJV has constructed a straw centaur. Is there any example of a half man/half animal turning out badly outside of fiction?
Umm, Mike Tyson?
The elephant man?
