Father John Neuhaus, as the younger Podhoretz describes, crossed the Tiber to Rome from the Rhine? of Lutheranism. He wrote movingly on both faiths. I subscribed to First Things for many years until the press of business became too much and I never could read it in a month. It remains an invaluable journal and Father Neuhaus' legacy is secure.
A great ally of the culture of life he helped change the once moribund response of Protestantism to the judicial assault on the sanctity of life. On a personal note, he once wrote me a note asking to use an excerpt on an article I had in the Washington Times on poet's corner at St. John the Divine for First Things. To my knowledge it did not get used but it was a great honor that he liked it and took the time to read it. I still have his handwritten note and will look at it tonight.
He also wrote on the proper way to die and it appears that he followed his own advice. Rest in Peace.
