It Ain't No Sin to be Glad You Rolled a Six

For many years JJV, CRH, myself and others have played various strategy board games like Civilization and, more recently, Settlers of Catan. The latter is better suited to those of us who can no longer, for unfathomable reasons, commit to an entire day of plotting, scheming and backstabbing.

However, I think we could all block out however much time it would take to play the Vatican Board Game. Given the Game Dynamic to which I have referred previously, it could be entirely possible for one of us to manueuver a cardinal with a penchant for installing his illegitimate children onto the throne of St. Peter via a massive bribery campaign. Oops, that's already been done. Art does imitate life, they say, somewhere.

Somehow I missed out on the multiplayer strategy gaming thing, though I'm pretty sure I played Risk once or twice (and wrote an article about it). Would love to sit in on/participate in a session of Settlers of Catan or the Vatican Board Game. Yet another reason (besides a trip to the Tune Inn and a visit to Dave's beautiful new commode) to hurry up and get to D.C.

I've never played Settlers, although I've heard it praised. The board game Civilization is not nearly the sucking vortex of time than Sid Maier's computer game of the same name.

Settlers is a very good game that can wrap up in a couple of hours. The only weakness I have noticed is that once a player becomes the frontrunner it is almost impossible to take them down and the game becomes a struggle for second place.

You're right about the Sid Maier vortex but a five- or six-person Civ (board) game can take eight hours to play, especially in the closing stages when the plotting, backstabbing etc. gets very complex.

Oh, I've played the board game version many times, too. But I think I've only played it once all the way through to the end!
