It has been suggested elsewhere on this blog that I owe Scooter Libby an apology for, among other things, serenading the Wilson family. Those who have heard me sing know that I should actually apologize to the Wilsons, but that is beside the point. Also beside the point is the fact that Laura and I had hired a sitter for the night so no additional family separation resulted from the aforementioned incident.
Now that all of that is out of the way, I will state for the record that I owe Scooter Libby precisely this. As someone trained neither in the law nor in the particulars of sensitive information, I was hitherto unaware that only the first person to reveal, say, the identity of a covert agent (hey, it's just an example), was potentially legally liable for the act. Once one person does it, anyone else can do it! Many thanks to JJV for clearing that up. I also have JJV to thank for the revelation that crimes alleged to have occurred during the investigation of a different incident are in fact not crimes. Come to think of it, I recall JJV raising that very point sometime in 1998, but I was busy renewing my subscription to The Weekly Standard so I paid him no heed.

The Whitewater investigation garnered numerous convictions. Clinton was apparently not responsible but there were underlying crimes. Moreover, unlike this case the prosecutor did not know at the start of the investigation that no crimes had been committed.
In any event I detested the Independent Counsel law, and special prosecutors in general.
